SUG assaulted over peaceful walk against increment in tuition fees

On the 13th of December, 2018, the Students' Union Government of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, presided by Com. Akadiri Bayonle Seun decided to have a peaceful walk to express their feelings of discomfort about the recent increment in the tuition fee.

The peaceful walk which started from the Students' Union Building in North Campus, to the South Campus of the school was disrupted at the Sport Pavilion of North Campus by the School Security Personnel. The disruption which led to the President of the Union, Com. Akadiri Bayonle Seun being assaulted, and their placards being destroyed, was spearheaded by the Chief Security Officer of the school.

In the post "peaceful walk" talk with the President, Com. Akadiri Bayonle Seun, he said, "This isn't a protest, this is just a peaceful walk of solidarity to reinstate our stance on the no increment of the tuition fee and yet, I was assaulted, slapped and in the process, lost a button of my shirt."

The Students' Union Government, with this, redirected their  peaceful solidarity walk to the Directorate of Students' Affairs office where the Dean, Dr. Sikiru Ajibola implored the Union to exercise patience, maintain calmness and not retaliate consequence of the assault. The Dean furthered that, the agitations of the Union being poured out through letters have been sent to the appropriate offices, and that the Board of Governing Council of the institution will take the necessary steps of action.

Below is more photo snapped at the peaceful walk against the increment of the school tuition fee.

We pray the school management reconsider and reduce the tuition fees.

Monday

Note this before paying your tuition fees

This is to inform you to hold on before proceeding to pay your tuition fee as the STUDENTS UNION GOVERNMENT (SUG) had forwarded a note on media due to the increase in the tuition fees, The notes goes thus:

STUDENTS UNION GOVERNMENT
THE POLYTECHNIC, IBADAN

Attention:

It's so disheartening and uncalled for, for The Governing Council of The Polytechnic Ibadan that has planned and implemented school fee Increment for newly admitted students.

But our efforts in negotiating with the management for total reversal of the increment is proved abortive with the word SAY NO TO INCREMENT

After deliberation with the management, they insisted that the tuition fee must be increased by certain percentage not total reversal as we are clamoring for.

The tuition fee was already increased by 10% last session and acceptance fee had already been increased this session

So, having not been able to reach compromise with the management,  the management went ahead with the increment in the tuition fees to be paid by the newly admitted ones which was increased by 50% levied on newly admitted students.

We hereby urge all the concerned student's not to make any payments till further directive by the union.

Its our believe that the increment will be reversed totally without any increment if this note of ALUTA is strictly followed.

Kindly be patience and give Maximum support in any means or whatsoever.

Amount of Tuition Fee to pay

This is to inform all Daily Part-Time Programme (DPP) students that the management of the The Polytechnic Ibadan had released the amount of money to be pay as tuition fees by students.

ASUP to begin Nationwide Strike on 12th December, 2018

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has declared that it would begin an indefinite strike from Wednesday, December 12th, 2018.

ASUP lecturers will join Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) who have been on strike for a month.

In a phone interview with PREMIUM TIMES on Wednesday morning, the National President of ASUP, Usman Dutse, said the federal government had failed to meet the demands of the polytechnic lecturers.

Prior to this impending strike, the union had on October 2 issued a 21-day ultimatum to the government before it extended it to November. But even then, it did not commence the strike.

But Mr Dutse said the proposed strike would be “total and indefinite”.

“This further emphasises the resolution of the 93rd National Executive Council meeting reached at the Yaba College of Technology, Lagos last week,” he said.

“Government has failed to implement and fulfil agreements it reached with the union as contained in the memorandum of understanding signed,” he said.

ASUP went on strike in November 2017; but when the federal government reached an agreement to implement the recommendations of the 2014 NEEDS assessment, the strike was suspended 15 days after.

The agreement particularly highlighted the need for increased funding of polytechnics.

Mr Dutse also said the roles of state government and the National Assembly is not encouraging when it comes to funding the education sector.

“The issue of the funding of the institutions has always been a major concern. After the government conducted the NEEDS assessment in 2014, it promised to implement it. Years after, there is no designed roadmap to implement that,” he said.

He said the bill meant to review the act on the establishment of polytechnics in the country was yet to be passed by the National Assembly. He said the union was hoping that the strike would also help fast-track its passage.

“The institutions are not funded. The states are even worse because state governments just establish schools without actually funding those schools. So, no infrastructure is in place,” he added.

The ASUP president also alleged that some state governments were owing salaries for up to 14 months just as institutions victimise union leaders who voice out against what he termed injustice.

“We have states that are owing about 14 month salaries. Some owe eight months. Benue, Ogun, Osun, Edo, Kogi are owing up to as long as 14 months,” he said.

NANS tells Ibadan Poly management to withdraw N32,000 acceptance charge

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has urged the management of the Polytechnic, Ibadan, to with immediate effect; withdraw the N32, 000 acceptance charges for the newly admitted students of the institution.

NANS Spokesman, Adeyemi Azeez Amoo, in a statement made available to journalists on Thursday described the charge as “fraudulent extortion”.

He pointed out that the leadership of the students body had met with Minister of Education in its bid to ensure a better and affordable educational status for students.

According to him, one of the issues discussed at the meeting was “the regular abstract charges of acceptance fee by schools.”

The statement read, “The President of NANS, Comrade Danielson Bamidele Akpan, has directed that the management of the Polytechnic of Ibadan, should as a matter of urgency withdraw totally the acceptance charges of N32,000.”

“We equally warn the polytechnic not to dare alter the status quo of the tuition fee as paid in the last session.”

“NANS can not afford to watch education been taken away from the access of the sons and daughters of the poor.”

“Finally, any attempt to negate the above directives from the NANS national secretariat by the management of the polytechnic Ibadan, NANS national leadership shall relocate its secretariat to Ibadan Polytechnic.”
