JUST IN: Nine (9) cultists held for ex-Ibadan Poly student’s murder

Police in Oyo State yesterday paraded nine suspected cultists who reportedly confessed to have been involved in the murder on August 27 of a former student of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, Olatunji Hammed (aka Maku) at the Apete area of Ibadan.

Parading the suspects at the state Police Command Headquarters, Eleyele, Ibadan, the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Abiodun Odude, said the cultists were arrested in Ibadan by his men at the Sango and Apete Police Divisions following a discreet investigation carried out by the Anti-Robbery Section of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID).

He said: “Those arrested have confessed to their membership of the Aye Confraternity and they are agents of Lucifer, masquerading as cultists, causing unrest in The Polytechnic, Ibadan and its neighbouring communities.

“Their nefarious activities took another dimension when they mowed down a former student of the polytechnic in cold blood at Apete area. They were arrested by our men of Anti-Robbery Section of the SCIID.
“The suspects were arrested with various arms and ammunition with other exhibits. They will soon be charged to court for proper prosecution.

Odude gave the names of the suspects as Fatai Akinola (33), John Amgbare (30 who is 2nd in Command in the cult group), Oladapo Tope (28, from whom a gun and cartridges were recovered), Sodiq Adekola (25) and Oludayo Olumide (33).
Others are Aremu Paul (24), Adebiyi Oluwajuwonlo (30), Martins Adegbegi (26) and Ogunfuwa Oriyomi (20).

Exhibits recovered from the cultists are one locally-made cut-to-size single-barrelled gun, two axes, cutlasses, charms, calabashes and other fetish items.

Speaking with our correspondent, one of the suspected cultists, Akinola, confessed to be the Number One member of the Aye Confraternity in The Polytechnic Ibadan.

He said: “I am a student of The Polytechnic Ibadan. I am the number one of the Aye Confraternity in Ibadan, but I am not the one who killed Maku, and I don’t know who killed him.

“Though I learnt that the deceased had a quarrel with one of us, (Sunday, popularly called Apata, who is now at large), and I am aware that our group had a clash with other groups. But I still can’t really say if the deceased died in the process because we had settled the matter. But later I got to know that the matter had gone beyond our own settlement. I am not the killer of Maku. I am just a suspect.”

Staff of Oyo tertiary institutions resume strike Friday

Staff of Oyo tertiary institutions resume strike Friday

Staff unions of the six tertiary institutions owned by the Oyo State Government are set to resume their suspended strike on Friday.

This will be a sequel to the expiration of the 21-day ultimatum issued by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of Staff Unions in Oyo State-owned tertiary institutions on May 24 May 2018.

Speaking with Tribune Online on Monday, Chairman, Joint Action Committee of the institutions, Mr Babatunde Adeniyi, the tertiary institutions’ staffs hinge their resolve to resume their strike on poor funding by the state government and the attendant accumulation of between eight to 24 months salary arrears.

He added that the state government had failed to release funds to clear the arrears of salaries as contained in its agreement of January 31, 2018 that led to the suspension of its last strike, while the governing councils of the six institutions had also not provided a template for the payment of the accrued salary arrears.

“Our ultimatum still stands. We are still awaiting the response of the state government, as up till now, they have not said anything. Nothing is stopping us as the strike will be declared on Friday, June 22nd, when our ultimatum lapses,” Adeniyi said.

Also, Adeniyi said the issue of fractional salary payment and payment of accrued salary arrears persisted because the state government only provided 25 percent subvention which was inadequate to attend to the affairs of institutions.

The staff unions gave a specific instance of the situation at College of Education, Lanlate where staff only received 50 percent, 25 percent and 30 percent of salaries in January

WE WERE NOT MOBILIZED FOR NYSC AND STILL NOT AWARDED OUR STATEMENT OF RESULT AFTER OVER 6MONTHS OF GRADUATION: "A CALL FOR DETAILED EXPLANATION FROM THE POLYTECHNIC, IBADAN MANAGEMENT, AND ALL CONCERNED PARTIES"

By Aggrieved Graduate...
Distinguish Readers,

It is absolutely imperative at this point in time to first appreciate the good work done so far by the past comrade of the institution, most especially the past Student Union Executives, the gallants honourables of the SUG 2016/2027 and past executives of faculties and departments of The Polytechnic, Ibadan.

Let me sincerely say without mixing words that the school management response to our newsletter has been a deafening silence, in short, it was very noticeable that nothing was said or done which was what prompted me to penned this article to awake the sleeping management. Before proceeding to the body of my article, I'd also love to extend my gratitude to the Dean Students affairs for his fatherly support and love for us, it's very glaring that the situation at hand is beyond your power but nevertheless you are appreciated.

To start with, following the title of this article which necessitates that the school management should give detailed explanation on why 2016/2017 graduates were not mobilized for Nysc after several months of graduating from school and why our statement of result was yet to be issued to us. To me, unavailability of processed graduating student's result and resultant mobilization problem.

Without any attempt to demean the school management, let me quickly remind the school management that, it is inherently in human nature to revolt against all intimidation being carried out on them.

The Polytechnic, Ibadan finished her second semester 2016/2017 examinations around September last year and yet students were not mobilized for NYSC, Why? Factually, there are schools who finished their exams after the Polytechnic, Ibadan had finished their own and yet their students were mobilized for the last year Nysc batch B (Stream I and II). In fact, there are schools who finished exams early this year and their students were still mobilized for Nysc Batch A. "We have our career planned out, why are you derailing us?"

Again, it was a completely baseless assertion that the school Mobilization process was delayed by the last strike the school went on. After the school resumed for this new session, we still have schools who mobilized their student, examples include OAU, OOU, ADO EKITI FEDERAL POLYTECHNIC, THE OKE OFUN POLYTECHNIC, among others. It's simply a sign that the management has a lackadaisical approach towards their job except the management prove otherwise.

Recently, some comrades in struggle took a bold step by writing the rector of the school in person of PROFESSOR O. O. FAWOLE but their efforts to see him went largely unacknowledged. We could have staged a peaceful protest but we thought writing the management would be the best solution but all efforts went futile.

I urge the school management to showcase a quality of a responsive, responsible, and efficient administration in every intellectual environment like The Polytechnic, Ibadan as there is a crying need to know why statement result was yet to be issued to us after over 5months of leaving school, why we were not mobilized till present and when we would be mobilized.

Lastly, before I step aside, let me quickly call on the appropriate body that is responsible for policy(ies) making, results collation and approval, students affairs, mobilization of graduates for National Youth Corps for this Polytechnic and the Rector being the head, that it is highly imperative at this point in time, to respond to all our newsletter and to also state reason(s) why we are facing mobilization and results problem. I hope the school management reads this piece and hope that they respond on time through the necessary body.

Thank you.

POLY IBADAN AND OTHER INSTITUTION NOW ON STRIKE

Staff unions of the six tertiary institutions owned by the Oyo state government have declared an indefinite strike starting today (Friday) over unpaid salaries of 15 months’ salary and payment of fractional salary.

This followed the expiration of the 14 days ultimatum on Thursday, November 2, 2017, where they had threatened to withdraw their services should the state government not clear all outstanding arrears and restore 100 per cent salary payment.

Chairman, Joint Action Committee of all staff unions across the institutions, Mr Babatunde Adeniyi confirmed to Tribune Online that management of all the institutions had been served with notification of declaration of strike commencing Friday.
The strike action is to be preceded by local protest in the concerned institutions: The Polytechnic, Ibadan; Emmanuel Alayande College of Education, Oyo; Oyo State College of Agriculture and Technology; The Ibarapa Polytechnic, Eruwa; The Oke-Ogun Polytechnic, Saki; College of Education, Lanlate.

“We have declared our strike as our ultimatum lapses 12 midnight today (Thursday). So, effective from tomorrow (Friday) our members are withdrawing their services. We will start with a protest in all the institutions in the state, starting by 8am.”

“All institutions have served their management with notification of declaration of a strike. Our demands remain payment of 15 months’ salary and restoration of 100 per cent salary payment. We get 25 per cent and payment of fractional salary is illegal. The government has failed to meet our demands. The management’s meeting with the state government on Thursday was not fruitful,” Adeniyi said.

Speaking on the development, State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Professor Adeniyi Olowofela said Governor Abiola Ajimobi was scheduled to meet with the management of the institutions on Friday.

Noting that the state government was aggregating findings on the situation from one institution to the other, Olowofela said the state would come up with a practical solution to the crisis soon., While adding that the state did not owe 15 months across all institutions, he appealed to the unions to tarry a while and pursue dialogue for the strike to be called off faster.

“We appeal to them to be patient and not go on strike for at least the next one week as we work on solutions. The governor will meet with the heads of the concerned tertiary institutions today (Friday).”

“I have had some interactions with the institutions’ heads to hear their demands. We have also scheduled a meeting with the Nigerian Labour Congress for next Tuesday. By the time we aggregate all our findings, we will come up with a practicable solution.”

“We know the quantum of money involved which differs from one institution to the other. There is no month we don’t pay some money to the institutions but they vary. For example, the Polytechnic Ibadan has paid fully for last year and has paid more than 75 per cent from January till March this year.”

“We want to see how we take care of the welfare of our people without injury to the people that are concerned.

Statistically, the government is subsiding each polytechnic student about N200,000 per session. We are looking at the possibility of resolving the crisis early enough. When we dialogue, issues can be resolved easily and faster,” Olowofela said.
